The Prime Minister of Grenada, Dr. The Right Honourable Keith Mitchell, strongly pushes for a region-wide reform of national statistical systems in the Caribbean to support good governance as conveyed in his keynote message during the NSDS launching held on 12 July 2017 in St. George’s, Grenada. As the region’s statistics champion, he affirmed his country’s commitment to lead in this endeavour through the passing of the revised Statistical Legislation and the preparation of the national strategy for the development of statistics (NSDS). In his speech, he highlighted the importance of statistics in Grenada’s various government processes and emphasised the importance of reliable data for cost-effective policy making. He further underscored that because of limited national financial resources, it is necessary to ensure the prudent use of funds and at the same time be accountable to his country's citizens; and statistics play a critical role in achieving these objectives.
The NSDS launching was attended by high level officials from the Grenadian Government, including regional and international development partners such as CARICOM, OECS, Caribbean Development Bank, Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, and UNDP. A training on NSDS was also organised for various stakeholders from government, private/business sector, civil society and non-government organisations.
