The Statistics Bureau, the national statistical office of Japan, sends statistical experts to foreign countries for extended periods when a request is received for technical cooperation. In most cases, experts are sent as part of JICA international cooperation programs, but the Bureau also accepts trainees from other countries participating in other JICA programs. Experts have been sent to Mexico, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Argentina, Myanmar, and Cambodia.

The Bureau has been promoting regular exchanges of statistical missions with the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Korea for a considerable period.

The Bureau accepts statistical missions visiting from abroad for specific purposes, providing them with information and data as requested. The Bureau receives more than 100 foreign visitors annually, and exchanges information and views on methodologies and technologies related to statistical censuses and surveys, including population censuses, establishment and enterprise censuses, labour force surveys, surveys of research and development, and the CPI. Trainees at SIAP occasionally visit the Bureau to observe various statistical activities (see below).
