Overview
As an active member of the international statistical community, Statistics Canada has been involved in the provision of technical assistance in statistics for over a quarter of a century. While this assistance has consisted of a combination of long-term projects interspersed with numerous short-term consultancies, Statistics Canada has a preference for long-term relationships with partner countries, so as to promote sustainability by ensuring that the cooperative effort follows a logical sequence of: strengthening, consolidation, phasing-out, and follow-up support. Statistics Canada is the executing partner for CIDA’s institutional support project to China’s National Bureau of Statistics.
Statistical activities
Within Statistics Canada the International Relations Division coordinates Statistics Canada’s contacts with the statistical offices of other countries and international organizations such as the United Nations, its specialized agencies and regional commissions, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the European Union and the International Statistical Institute. It provides policy advice on international matters to senior Agency management; coordinates the work required for fulfilling international obligations such as representation at intergovernmental meetings and data reporting; manages the Agency’s International Technical Assistance Program; and maintains contact on behalf of the Agency with the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Canadian International Development Agency.
