The Commonwealth of Independent States was created in 1991 and currently includes Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine. In 1993 the Heads of State signed an agreement on the creation of an economic union based on the free movement of goods, services, labour force and capital to facilitate the development of coordinated monetary, fiscal and economic policies and harmonise regulatory activities.
CISSTAT was established to coordinate the statistical activities of the CIS states. This includes developing and publishing common statistical methodologies and recommendations for the harmonization of standards and classifications in line with internal best practice. CISSTAT also facilitates the exchange of information, organises seminars and provides other support to national statistical services. Finally the Committee creates and maintains common statistical databases covering all member countries.
