South East Asian (ASEAN) member states affirmed the central role of their regional statistical strategy in facilitating regional integration, at a workshop held in Jakarta on 28-29 November 2012. The ASEAN Secretariat, Eurostat, and PARIS21 co-organised the regional event "ASEAN Regional Workshop on Strategic Statistical Planning: Towards a stronger ASEAN Community Statistical System" to promote support for ASEAN's regional strategy for the development of statistics (RSDS) and for ASEANstats, the ASEAN Secretariat's statistical unit.
The Cambodian Secretary of State in the Ministry of Planning, H.E. Mr. Ouk Chay, delivered a keynote address on the role of statistics in facilitating the way forward to ASEAN regional integration. He commented that statistics are "an important tool in translating strategic goals into concrete, manageable, and measurable actions."
The event brought together over 60 participants from the 10 ASEAN member states, regional and international organisations, external providers of development co-operation, experts and others. Key messages that emerged from the discussions were (i) strengthening consultations between users and producers at the national and regional levels, (ii) improving communications both in national statistical systems and ASEANstats, (iii) aligning NSDSs and RSDSs with one another, and (iv) conducting a review of the current RSDS in 2013 to feed into a new regional strategy.
