From 1 to 3 July 2008 in Pretoria, Statistics South Africa hosted the historic 1st Africa Conference of Young Statisticians. This initiative has come out of the recognition of the limited attention paid to young statisticians in Africa and also to prepare young statisticians for the ISI 2009 as an attempt to start to change the profile of the ISI and to build the capacity of young statisticians through engaging in such meetings and being able to prepare papers on key issues of statistics in Africa.
Four key themes of the Conference have emerged:
- Research statistics for Africa in a new renaissance
- The challenges of measurement for official statistics: Meeting the demands of Africa's development agenda
- Methodological issues in statistics
- Statistical Education
