In partnership with El Salvador authorities, ECLAC, the IDB, and SICA, the PARIS21 Secretariat organised a workshop on statistical capacity building for Central American countries. National and international poverty reduction policies were at the heart of discussions, with special attention paid to the specific situations of the countries in the sub-region. Numerous activities are currently underway to increase the use of statistics in defining, monitoring, and evaluating development policies. In many countries of the region, statistical building is a priority among national and international decisionmakers. The San Salvador workshop should help formalise a process to improve data quality and thus the well-being of the people in the region. The workshop took place from 7-9 May 2003 in San Salvador.
