Data use in policy making has great potential to support inclusive and sustainable development. Data producers, including such as national statistics offices (NSOs) and ministries, face a growing demand for timely and disaggregated data that can allow for targeted government interventions where they are most needed.
This growing concern highlights the need to support the development of countries' data capacities to enable them to meet the demand for information from different users. In this context, the use of AI solutions provides opportunities to make data production processes more efficient, make data more accessible, and ease the use of data in policy-making cycles.
The Partnership in Statistics for Development in the 21st Century (PARIS21) is collaborating with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the Data Lab of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to collect best practices for promoting data use and data capacities in countries. This event, hosted alongside the UNESCO Conference on Capacity Building on AI and Digital Transformation in the Public Sector, will bring together policy makers, data and AI experts, civil society and academia to discuss strategies in improving official data production and data use, and exploring options for collaboration. The event will use hands-on sessions to encourage peer-learning on topics related to building data capacities, increasing official data use in policy making, and exploiting the opportunities brought by AI for both the production and use of data and official statistics.
