This report outlines findings and recommendations emerging from group discussions (held during a dedicated workshop) and interviews, both conducted as part of the study. The research explored gender data use across policy areas but draws on insights from four policy cases, in particular: the Gender and Development Policy 2019, the National Policy for the Eradication of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), the Climate Change Act Amendment (2023) and the Makueni County Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) Policy (2021).

The Role of Gender Data in Policy Making: Findings and Recommendations from the Republic of Maldives
Gender statistics and indicators provide an evidence base to develop and monitor policies and programmes oriented towards reducing gender inequality. However, the availability and accessibility of gender statistics can only truly help advance gender equality where this gender data is taken up and used to drive meaningful policy change. Until recently very little was known about the role of gender statistics and gender data in policy making in the Maldives. To address this knowledge gap, in 2023, MBS and MSFD partnered with PARIS21 to implement a joint study exploring the barriers and enablers of gender data use in policy making in the Maldives.
