NSDS workshop for Jamaica's NSS
The Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN), in partnership with PARIS21, organised the first NSS-wide NSDS training-workshop on 18-20 July 2017 participated by 50 representatives from 28 government, business, non-government/not-for-profit agencies, including academic institutions in Jamaica and international and regional development agencies such as Caribbean Development Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, UNDP, and UNICEF. The launching of the NSDS process, keynoted by the Honourable Fayval Williams, Minister of State, Ministry of Finance and the Public Service, is part of the Government of Jamaica’s push to strengthen its national statistical system in response to the data needs of Jamaica Vision 2030 and Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 or SDGs.
Workshop Recommendations
The major recommendations arising from the NSDS workshop include: improving data quality assurance within the NSS through setting of statistical standards and adoption of internationally-agreed methodologies and classifications; enhancing data sharing across agencies and development of IT systems/infrastructure to facilitate better data exchange and reporting; strengthening data security; expanding open data in the NSS; revising the statistical legislation and instituting statistical policies; and strengthening capacity building programmes for statisticians in the NSS.
STATIN plans to have the NSDS in place by early 2018.
