A data-driven approach to understanding climate change vulnerability
Its location in the Caribbean exposes the Dominican Republic and its citizens to recurring extreme weather events such as hurricanes, tropical storms, and shifts in weather patterns, and because of climate change these events are occurring with increasing intensity and frequency. In this context, the availability and strategic use of official data are fundamental for designing public policies, strengthening decision-making processes, and promoting effective and inclusive climate action.
The National Statistics Office (ONE) has developed a set of climate change vulnerability indicators based on data from the 2024 National Household Survey (ENHOGAR), supplemented by other official climate change statistics.
Driving climate action through the use of official statistics for decision making
Beyond making data available, using them effectively is key to ensuring that climate action is results-oriented. Many organisations still face challenges in accessing and interpreting available climate information, which limits its use in decision making.
ONE and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MMARN), in collaboration with the Partnership on Statistics for Development in the 21st Century (PARIS21), organised a two-and-a-half-day workshop for stakeholders in the national statistical system working on climate change issues. The workshop was an opportunity for collaboration between different agencies which would strengthen capacity to disseminate statistics in ways that support uptake and use, and develop the skills to access and turn these data into supports for decision making.
The workshop aimed to strengthen the capacities of public sector data users, promoting the use of climate statistics for evidence-based, informed decision making. Participants from the national statistical system delved into the use of climate change statistics as key tools for evidence-based decision making. Participants developed a communication product based on official statistics that promotes climate action initiatives.
