How the SDGs Increased Data Production and What This Means for Policy Making

8 Jan, 2025

This paper examines the evolution of data and statistics since the inception of the Sustainable Development Goals, looking at how the Millennium Development Goals first put the spotlight on the unequal representation of the global population in data, and subsequently the Sustainable Development Goals made improving the quantity, quality and scope of data an urgent priority. Data-driven policy making? The politics, people and practices behind gender data use

24 Sep, 2025
| Publication
The report is the first cross-country analysis developed from PARIS21's novel, collaborative research methodology piloted in Kenya, Rwanda, the Maldives and Dominican Republic between 2023 and 2024, in close collaboration with national statistical offices and national gender machineries. PARIS21 and its country partners assess how gender data are accessed, interpreted, and used in designing and implementing both gender-specific policies and mainstream sectoral policies in areas such as education, climate change, and ICT. The research resulted in numerous successful impact stories being identified.

By documenting these experiences at country level, participating partners have been able to develop actionable, country-specific recommendations to amplify gender data use, validated by national stakeholders working across data and policy-making processes.
