The data revolution and the NSDS evolution: How have 25 years of strategic planning changed national statistical systems around the world?

22 Jan, 2026
| Our impact
Supporting countries through the NSDS cycle has been fundamental to PARIS21 since it was created. Over these 25 years the face of data and statistics has changed beyond recognition; international, regional and national development plans, climate change and biodiversity agreements and the COVID-19 pandemic have increased and changed data needs. In parallel, technological advances have changed how data are collected, processed, managed, and used. But while countries monitor the implementation of individual NSDS, little is understood about how the NSDS contributes to developing statistical capacity. As PARIS21 works to document and explore enablers and drivers of statistical capacity, this article highlights anecdotal experiences from PARIS21 and its partners on how the NSDS is shaping national statistical systems.

Learning and moving forward: Madagascar’s journey to a statistics culture

7 Jun, 2024
| Our impact
When Madagascar developed its first national strategy for the development of statistics in 2007 it was a major milestone for the production and use of statistics in the country. However, as the country develops its second NSDS with support from PARIS21 and UNFPA, discussing and learning from what worked and what did not is an important step. As Madagascar’s public and policy makers are facing multiple and unexpected consequences of climate change, developing a culture of statistics to provide reliable, regular and timely information that is used by a range of stakeholders is a vital tool.

In Grenada ambition and vision drive a new statistical system

3 Feb, 2026
| Our impact
Long-term relationships between PARIS21 and its partners are always grounded in a shared vision of the vital role of official data and statistics in policymaking for better lives. PARIS21’s partnership with the Grenada Central Statistics Office over the last decade has seen a vision for a better national statistical system turn into reform and a clear actionable pathway to provide official statistics on some major national policy challenges.

Grenada’s first national statistical strategy, with its comprehensive mapping of users and producers of climate change data and statistics highlights that even when countries lack experience in statistical reform and planning, their strategies do not need to lack sophistication or ambition. This article looks back at the main milestones in Grenada’s development, which is anchored in the SDGs. Has provided a clear vision for how the country wants to build its statistical system – one in which data reflect citizen’s realities, needs and ambitions.

How is the ADAPT tool helping to modernise Paraguay’s data systems?

1 Nov, 2023
| Our impact
Achieving and monitoring progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals requires more data than ever before. In this respect, 2020 and 2021 were milestone years for statistics in Paraguay. With a new statistics law, the inauguration of the new National Statistics Institute, the creation of a modern statistical system and a National Strategy for the Development of Statistics that includes the planning of gender statistics, the country is looking to build a statistical system that can provide the data that the country needs for sound policy making. From the outset, PARIS21’s ADAPT tool has been integrated into this system. One year on, what are the benefits of these efforts?
