PARIS21 convenes annual meetings and communities of practice to accelerate peer learning and build a network of countries, organisations, agencies, and individuals that are committed to the production and use of statistics for evidence-based sustainable development.

Engaging in international initiatives on development data

Partnerships between different data producers and users are essential to help countries build robust statistical systems that deliver accurate, timely and inclusive data for implementing and monitoring their development goals. PARIS21 engages in and drives a number of international initiatives to bring together, mobilise, and co-ordinate partners and other stakeholders in the data community and beyond to advance sustainable development through inclusive, evidence-based action.

Engaging parliaments in data use

Parliaments are particularly powerful actors that can change lives through the use of data in their work of representation, legislation and oversight. Acknowledging that solely increasing the production of data will not change the way it is used to develop, monitor and target policies, PARIS21 has been engaging members of parliament (MPs) on data use and increasing data literacy of parliamentary staff.

PARIS21 aims to bridge the gap between national statistical offices (NSOs) and their parliaments by strengthening the skills needed to use evidence systematically, bringing great appreciation and support for the work of NSOs and national statistical systems (NSSs). At the same time, PARIS21’s approach to engaging parliaments develops the capacity of the statistics office to communicate data for the specific purpose of parliament work. Making data useable for MPs is an investment in good governance, better policies and delivery of public services and efficient planning for sustainable development.

PARIS21 is governed by a Board and an Executive Committee.

The Board provides guidance to the PARIS21 Secretariat and includes representatives of developing countries from all regions of the world, bilateral donors, international and regional organisations, the private sector, NGOs and foundations. The Board convenes once a year at the PARIS21 Fall Meetings to guide the strategic orientation of the Partnership, advises on the programme of work and budget, and shares learning. The Board mandate runs for two years.

The Executive Committee monitors and guides the Partnership’s activities and meets three times a year. Members review, discuss and approve key elements of the PARIS21 strategy, the programme of work, and budget. The Executive Committee is made up of 13 members nominated by the Board.

The Board and the Executive Committee are presided by a Chair nominated by the PARIS21 Secretariat and approved by the Board and the Executive Committee. The Chair holds a mandate of two years.
