Supporting countries through the NSDS cycle has been fundamental to PARIS21 since it was created. Over these 25 years the face of data and statistics has changed beyond recognition; international, regional and national development plans, climate change and biodiversity agreements and the COVID-19 pandemic have increased and changed data needs. In parallel, technological advances have changed how data are collected, processed, managed, and used. But while countries monitor the implementation of individual NSDS, little is understood about how the NSDS contributes to developing statistical capacity. As PARIS21 works to document and explore enablers and drivers of statistical capacity, this article highlights anecdotal experiences from PARIS21 and its partners on how the NSDS is shaping national statistical systems.

Soumaila Sagara was studying for an undergraduate degree in journalism in Bamako, when his professors selected him to participate in a PARIS21/FAO regional workshop on communicating agricultural statistics in Benin in 2023. The workshop was part of wider efforts to increase the use of agricultural statistics by media and journalists across the continent. Now studying for a master’s degree in journalism, while setting up his own NGO focussed on improving education, Soumaila recounts how the workshop set him on a path in which he is able to combine his passion for journalism with data-informed articles to carry out vital security and humanitarian work.

Despite having achieved gender parity in many educational outcomes, women in the Maldives have fewer economic opportunities than men, and a lack of data has rendered women in the informal economy invisible. However, in designing the country’s 10-year National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS), the Maldives National Bureau of Statistics (MNBS) brought together partners such as the Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services (MoGFSS), UN Women, PARIS21 and civil society to ensure that gender statistics will be mainstreamed into national statistics to shape national debate and efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
